  • Once your birds are Home.

Once you get your new girls home it is good to get them used to theire new enviroment. It can sometimes take up to a week for the chooks to become familiar and learn where feed and water stations are, and where to perch and lay. It is a good idea to keep them in there coop for the first few days to ensure this happens. Chickens strangely like consistency and find change very stressful.

  • Good Diet

Chooks are great forage's and enjoy pecking into the ground for insects, bugs and worms . They need a good mix of carbs, protein, fat, fiber, salt and minerals. Vegetable and food scraps are good for the small backyard family with a few chooks . If buying pellets for your birds make sure it is a complete feed containing blood and bone and high in proteins
  • Nutrition

Amino acids such as lysine and methionine are essitial proteins the chooks need to grow and lay well. These proteins are foundnd in Chicken , Turkey , Pork , Shellfish, Cheese and Red meat to name a few. Yes Chickens are omnivores and the amino acids found in animal proteins are great for their egg production.
  • Point of Lay Chooks

Point of lay is generally around 22 weeks. This is the point the chook starts laying but all chooks are different and their first lay can be any were from 18 to 28 weeks so dont worry if its not dead on the 22 week mark. You will notice the red colour in the wattle and comb when she is ready to lay. Winter and summer point of lay chooks can also vary with their lay age as the lenth of daylight also controlls there laying.
  • Eggs

They first few lays may be spread over a few days and be soft or have no shell this is nothing to worry about. The lay will increase as they become accustomed to laying and Eggs will become hard and smooth. Brown shavers can live for up to 8 years but after there 1st year of Lay there egg production drops off every year.
